The benefit becoming member of English Heritage is free entry at many historical places as well as many castles same as Carlisle Castle.
Carlisle Castle was first built in Roman times and after that during the reign of William II of England, the son of William the Conqueror . At that time, Cumberland was still considered a part of Scotland. William II ordered the construction of a Norman style castle in Carlisle on the same site of the old Roman fort of Luguvalium. It was dated by archaeological artefacts to 72AD, with the castle construction beginning in 1092.
In 1122, Henry I of England ordered a stone castle with towers to be constructed on the site. A keep and city walls were constructed. The existing keep dates from somewhere between 1122 and 1135.
No doubt Carlisle Castle has a long history and it played a great part in British history. Some of the facts were mind blowing and the details of stone work still so sharp. There’s a army museum as well inside castle boundary. It was cold freezing day buy we enjoyed our visit much.

A super place to visit and explore lots of things to see and walk about at your leisure.
Excellent views from the castle battlements over Carlisle and the history of this place too.
Still a working army location, we were lucky to see the local Army Cadets band practicing their music.
A great place to visit.
I'd recommend visiting here.
Thank you 😁 🇬🇧🎖️👍

I went to the firework display of an evening with another 100.000 people.
It was not for me. Far too busy.

A great place to visit both for its welcome and its history. ♿️ Although actual access to the central area is possible for people with limited mobility, the building is historic with narrow stairs and multi levels and is therefore difficult to access. That having been said, those that can access the many small rooms and dark corners, or walk along the curtain walls, will discover over 1000 years of history, and lots of information. Worth the journey!
Within the castle area is the military history museum, with additional entry charges. But that is a review in itself. But there is a cafe selling basic drinks and refreshments alongside this with indoor and outdoor seating.

Very interesting and loved that you can explore all of the staircases and walk around the top wall. A few more plaques explaining what some of the rooms were previously used for would have made it 5 🌟.

Yes it is well worth a visit!
I took in some of the castle on a hot day in August this year, then returned yesterday to get a better look at what I hadn't yet explored. There is so much history here, which the present structure stands testament to. I was extremely fortunate to engage with one of the guides, who gave me excellent insights to historical events and the relevance of the fortifications and buildings to them.
Inside the castle itself, there is a Regimental Museum, which I also consider a must-see. Friendly and helpful staff, with many items on display and very informative.
